09:00 Mammary Constriction Syndrome

Presented by: Edith Kernerman

There has been much research on the various causes of nipple and breast pain in the lactating mother. In recent years, evidence has been brought to light to suggest that some of the more common causes of pain may not actually be involved or as involved as previously thought. Our research has suggested that much breast and nipple pain is either: referred from traumatised nipples, vasospasm that radiates, or is a result of muscle tension in the pectoralis area - now identified as Mammary Constriction Syndrome.

14:15 Lovers in a Dangerous Time: an evidence-based overview of male and female reproduction in a hostile environment

Presented by: Jean-Jacques Duguoa, ND, PhD

A number of chemicals released into the environment are endocrine disruptors and potentially mutagenic to sperm and in some cases ova.  Human reproduction can be challenging for some couples, particularly when dry cleaning or sitting on a treated wood deck can interfere with the process.

Using a systematic review of the literature, this presentation will provide an overview of environmental toxins and chemicals that interfere with human reproduction.  Using the best evidence available, treatment options to promote both male and female fertility will be discussed.  Lastly, treatment options in pregnancy will also be discussed.

Chemical disruptors of human reproduction will be discussed: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), heavy metals, chlorinated and fluorinated compounds and other chemicals.  Treatment options to promote male fertility will ne discussed: l-carnitine, co-enzyme Q10, vitamin E, zinc, selenium, vitamin C, ashwaghanda, glutathione precursors and others.  Treatments to promote female fertility will be discussed: probiotics, vitex, evening primrose oil, dong quai, rehmania, bupleurm and others. Placental transfer of drugs and chemicals during pregnancy will be discussed.  Treatment options for a healthy pregnancy will be discussed: vitamin B6, ginger, folic acid, probotics, fish oils and others.

When Shen Encounters Jing: Exporing Pediatrics from Eastern & Western Perspectives

The practice of pediatrics is unlike the practice of adult medicine, having its own framework, challenges, and skills.  Practitioners who may want to work with children should be aware of critical theory related to pediatrics, as well as know how to modify their appointment structures, treatment approaches, and expectations to the treatment of children.  Studying pediatrics as a unique discipline enhances our understanding of adult medicine in ways that are often delightful, profound, and unexpected.  This workshop is intended for practitioners of AOM who are interested in pediatric practice and want information, both theoretical and practical, on integrating pediatrics using the many tools AOM has to offer.  Integrative management of a number of specific conditions will be included.

Course Objectives:

Ø  Understand varying constructs of the psyche and how these relate to the field of Pediatrics.

Ø  Understand the unique characteristics of children and how these guide diagnosis and treatment.

Ø  Understand the basics of setting up a practice that accepts children.

Ø  Understand the adaptations needed to treatment techniques applied to children.

Ø  Understand the Eastern and Western approaches to the treatment of a number of common Pediatric conditions

Dr. David W. Miller, MD, LAc is one of few MD physicians in the U.S. dually board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.  Dr. Miller received his M.D. from the Brown University School of Medicine, and completed his internship and residency in Pediatrics at the University of Chicago.  He is currently an instructor at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in Chicago where he designed the campus’ Pediatrics curriculum and supervises a Pediatrics clinic.  He is also in private practice with East-West Integrated Medicine seeing children and adults.
